Whittier is the stretch of South Minneapolis between Franklin Avenue and Lake Street, from Lyndale Avenue over to I 35W. It has an art museum, an art college, and a whole avenue of places to eat, and you can reach all of it on foot.

What Whittier Actually Is

A neighborhood you can walk.

Start with the name. Whittier comes from the old neighborhood school, which the school board named for the poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Families started calling the whole area after the school, and it stuck.

Then walk it. Walk Score rates Whittier a Walker’s Paradise with a score of 91, the 6th most walkable neighborhood in Minneapolis. Daily errands do not need a car, and it rates a Biker’s Paradise too.

Gold line: Eat Street, Nicollet Avenue from Franklin to Lake through Whittier (Wikipedia). Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Mia, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, sits at 2400 Third Avenue South. It is Minnesota’s largest art museum, with more than 100,000 artworks spanning about 5,000 years, and general admission is always free. You just walk in.

A few blocks over is MCAD, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, at 2501 Stevens Avenue. It was founded in 1886.

Then there is Eat Street. That is Nicollet Avenue through Whittier, known for its restaurants, coffee shops and Asian markets. The neighborhood and its businesses gave it the name, and the new streetscape along the whole corridor was finished in 1997.

Right on it is Spyhouse Coffee, at 2451 Nicollet. Spyhouse opened its very first shop here in 2000, in a 1926 brownstone, just blocks from MCAD, Mia and the Children’s Theatre. Spyhouse is about a three minute walk from the condo in the video.
