That's been my line for years. I'd rather go find you the right house than sit and wait for one to show up.
In Victoria, it needs a footnote.
This town was built by farmers. The Diethelm brothers put up the first shelter in 1851, and families
came from Germany, Holland and Switzerland on word of mouth about the soil. Wheat was the cash crop. Potatoes, carrots,
cabbage and corn fed the families that grew them. The town got its name in 1856, when families on opposite
sides of Lake Bavaria settled their differences and the north shore donated the land for a church.
And one of those farmers changed the country. Wendelin Grimm arrived in 1859 carrying seed from
Germany he called “everlasting clover.” He spent fifteen winters keeping seed only from the plants that
lived through them, and grew the first truly winter-hardy alfalfa in North America. Every modern variety
in this country came out of that field.
His farmstead is still standing, inside Carver Park Reserve. The road it sits on carries his name.
So, hunter, not farmer. But I know whose ground this is.
What Victoria Actually Is
Victoria calls itself the City of Lakes and Parks, which is the rare case of a city slogan being an understatement.
Carver Park Reserve alone holds 604 acres of water and three fishable lakes, Stieger, Auburn and Zumbra, plus 25 miles of hiking trail, 10 miles of mountain-bike singletrack, cross-country ski and horseback trails, a campground,
and the Lowry Nature Center, the first public nature center ever built in the Twin Cities.
The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is right next door in Chaska. So is the Wassermann Lake Preserve. The
Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail runs more than fifteen miles from Hopkins straight through town and into the park reserve. You can ride to Excelsior for lunch without touching a highway.
Kids attend Eastern Carver County Schools (District 112). Downtown is small and walkable, Bayfront Park sits on
Stieger Lake, and you are twenty-five minutes from a Minneapolis office and about four minutes from a trailhead.
Choosing Victoria over Excelsior or Shorewood. In Excelsior or Shorewood you are buying a Lake Minnetonka
address, and the address is a large part of the price. Victoria trades that for room: generally more house and more
lot for the same money, District 112 schools, and Carver Park Reserve on the edge of town rather than a
dock on the water. Here the lakes are somewhere you go, not something you pay a premium to look at. Both are good answers.
They are just answers to different questions, and it is worth knowing which one you want before you start touring.
Carver Park Reserve
Three fishable lakes, Stieger, Auburn and Zumbra, 25 miles of hiking trail and the Lowry Nature Center, all on the edge of town. The LRT Trail runs right into it from downtown.
Downtown, On Foot
Park once at Victoria Drive and Stieger Lake Lane and the morning takes care of itself: coffee and a caramel roll, a loop down to the lake, and the trail out to Carver Park Reserve if you brought a bike.

Downtown and Beyond
7924 Victoria Dr
A small batch organic bakery that bakes in house every morning, with coffee from Tiny Footprint. It opened in 2015, and the caramel rolls are the reason people know the name.
7940 Victoria Dr
Elevated American cooking with a French influence, out of a scratch kitchen on the same block as Ruby’s Roost. Dinner Tuesday through Sunday, closed Mondays.
1495 Stieger Lake Ln
The brewery that took over the old Enki taproom, with handcrafted pizzas and an in house café that opens at 7 a.m. Thursday through Sunday.
1715 Stieger Lake Ln
Going into the old Victoria House building. It is not open yet, and its liquor license hearing was on the city’s calendar for October 26, 2026. More in the downtown Victoria guide.
1730 Stieger Lake Ln
The city park on Stieger Lake, about a three minute walk from the corner. Halloween in Victoria is here on Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 1:00 to 3:30.
7025 Nature Center Dr
The first public nature center built in the Twin Cities, inside Carver Park Reserve, with trumpeter swans and osprey out on the water. About 18 minutes from downtown by bike. Open Monday to Saturday 9 to 5, Sunday noon to 5.
7720 Grimm Rd, Carver Park Reserve
Where Wendelin and Julianna Grimm grew the first winter hardy alfalfa in North America, which is why Three Rivers calls it the birthplace of the Dairy Belt. Open during scheduled programs.
3675 Arboretum Dr, Chaska
Right next door in Chaska, for gardens and trails when you want a different walk.
Through downtown

Lions Park, 1505 82nd St
Small Business Saturday is November 28, 2026. Then Light Up Victoria fills Lions Park on Thursday, December 3, from 6:00 to 7:30. It is free, put on by the City and the Victoria Business Association.
